Fostering Student Success by Limiting Distractions

Following the research on improving students’ concentration, social interaction, and academic performance.

There is abundant research showing that mobile phones and social media negatively impact students’ well being. Studies reveal that reducing use of phones and other electronic signaling devices during school hours improves students’ concentration, social interaction, and academic performance.

For that reason, students and staff can expect greater enforcement of our Phone-Free School Protocol this year. Specifically, two middle schools and CSI will be moving from phone lockers to Yondr bags in middle grades to secure the devices. All other schools will be able to use phone lockers.

Mobile phones will not be available from the time students enter school until the end of the day, including breaks and lunch periods. Cell phones and smart watches are to be turned off and stowed away. Your school principal will provide specific details about the rules at your child's school. Students will still have access to school-issued digital devices for learning, which are secure and monitored.

Of course, exceptions will be made for students who need their devices for medical reasons as documented by a physician.

We understand this change may require adjustment, but we believe it will enhance our students' learning experience, and appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

How You Can Support:

  • Discuss the Protocol: Talk to your child about the importance and benefits of this policy.
  • Set Expectations: Ensure your child understands the policy and its consequences.
  • Provide Alternatives: Encourage your child to engage in activities like reading, playing sports, or socializing during breaks.
